About New Bedford MA

The city of New Bedford is situated in Bristol County, Massachusetts, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city had a total population of 95,072, making it the sixth-largest city in Massachusetts. New Bedford is located approximately 50 miles (80 km) south of Boston, 18 miles (29 km) east of Providence, 10 miles (16 km) west of Fall River, and 75 miles (121 km) southeast of Worcester. The City of New Bedford is referred to as “the Whaling City” because, during the 19th century, the city was one of the most important whaling ports in the world, along with Nantucket and New York City. The whaling industry was booming in New Bedford during the early 1800s, and the city became one of the wealthiest cities in the nation during this time. However, the whaling industry declined during the mid-19th century, and New Bedford’s economy shifted to other industries such as fishing, manufacturing, and trade. Today, New Bedford is considered to be a part of the Greater Boston metropolitan area, and it is home to a diverse population.
