Acushnet is a town in Massachusetts’s Bristol County. As of July 22, 2021, the population was 10,553. The town of Acushnet, Massachusetts, is located in the southern part of the state, approximately 50 miles from Boston and 30 miles from Providence, Rhode Island. It covers a total area of 19 square miles, with 18.4 square miles being land and the remaining 2.76% being water. Acushnet is bordered by Rochester and Mattapoisett to the east and northeast, Fairhaven to the south, and New Bedford to the west. The town line between Rochester, Acushnet,and Mattapoisett also forms part of the border between Bristol and Plymouth counties.
Acushnet was first settled in 1659 as a part of Old Dartmouth. It was officially incorporated in 1860. The town’s name derives from the Wampanoag tribe, of which “Acushnet” is a derivative. It means “The quiet resting place near water,” referring to the fact that the Wampanoag tribe settled along the Acushnet River near its mouth, where it empties into Buzzards Bay.
The convenient location of Acushnet near the water made it an ideal place for early settlers to build their homes and businesses. The economy has always been closely tied to the water, with fishing, shipbuilding, and whaling being some of the main industries in the past.
